Picture of Biddy Simon
Biddy uses the traditional Waringarri ochre palette to meticulously hand-paint each of her works once she has finished carving them. The Black-necked Stork, or Jabiru, is the only stork found in Australia. Standing at a height of 129 - 137 cm, with black and white body plumage, glossy dark green and purple neck and massive black bill, it is easily distinguished from all other Australian birds. The legs are long and coral-red in colour. The female is distinguished by its yellow eye. Immature birds resemble adults, but the black plumage is replaced by brown and the white plumage is duskier. The Black-necked Stork inhabits wetlands, such as floodplains of rivers with large shallow swamps and pools, and deeper permanent bodies of water. Occasionally individuals will stray into open grass, woodland areas or flooded paddocks in search of food.  USD $1000
The Kimberley is replete with Dreaming sites associated with the Australian Crane. Biddy Simon has brought this piece to life and has beautifully ornamented her White Crane piece in rich ochre colors extracted from sacred sites in her country.

Biddy Simon is a senior artist working out of the Waringarri Arts Center in Kununurra, Western Australia. She creates wonderful sculptures out of hand-picked trees that she shapes into beautiful totems that she hand-paints with Waringarri's traditional ochre palette of colors. Totems are animal, plant, or natural objects that serve among certain tribal or traditional peoples as the emblem of a clan or family and sometimes revered as its founder, ancestor, or guardian or are representations of such objects. "Biddy's Birds" are profoundly beautiful and each piece she carves has its own mysterious personality and presence.
