About Jukuna Mona Chuguna
In Jukuna's own words: "I paint my mother’s and father’s country. This is the country where I was living before. When I paint, it is this country that I am thinking about. During the hot time (October to January) we would live at one place, near living water. We would eat kuyu (game) and mangarri (variety of bush foods). My feeling for my country comes from the stories too. When I was a young girl my mother and my father and the old people taught me about Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime).
When I go to my country I think about my parents walking around all the different waterholes and the japi (features around waterholes which indicate the presence of Kalpurtu the water snake). I like going back to my country to see the waterholes. It is sad too because my father is buried there.
I think about my country all of the time. I like to paint the desert, it makes me think about my parents. I paint my country, the different places, the mangarri and the waterholes. I give the names for the waterholes, for those places we used to walk to."
About Kutal-Kutal
In her own words: "This is my country near Tarpu. I always walk around here with Wakartu when I was a little one. We would get witchety grub and ngarika and other mangarri bush tucker.
Sometimes when I dream I go back there and I look all around my country, like when I was a kid. I get that feeling inside like I was still there. I have painted all different tree's like turtujarti, yarun, tarnjubtu and Wirrijati. I have also painted bush honey and different grasses."
